History of IPG

On July 13, 2005, the Cabinet approved the upgrading of 27 Teacher Training Colleges in Malaysia to the status of Teacher Education Institutes (Institut Pendidikan Guru or IPG). From institutions that only awarded diplomas and certificates, these institutions were now authorized to confer Bachelor of Education degrees. This upgrading had the implication of elevating IPGs to higher education institutions with university status. In line with this change, IPGs began implementing the Bachelor of Education (PISMP) program. The inaugural batch of IPG graduates completed their studies and received their Bachelor of Education degrees in 2011.

IPGM and IPG were mandated to carry out Pre-Service and In-Service Teacher Education Programs as stipulated in the Education Act 1996. A Senate was established to make decisions regarding academic policies. Additionally, IPGM was also responsible for planning and monitoring Teacher Education Services (PPK) carried out by IPGs.
